Racing Yacht Capsizes

International Sunfish Masters Championship
Racing for the coveted title of International Masters Sunfish Championship are nine spunky women ranging in age from 45 to 71. This is not a ladies only event. These healthy women will challenge more than 30 men contenders for the right to call them self a Master Sunfish Sailor. The men who range in age from the minimum of 40 to age 79 are fierce competitors. Everyone will race against each other in ten heats over three days.
Many of these sailors have indulged in a lifetime of sailing. Rick Whitehurst began sailing at age 8. Growing up in Key West Rick was fortunate to be a teenager during the Hobie hey days. Having started on a sunfish Rick says, “It’s good to start young.” The sunfish is easy for a youngster to right when the inevitable capsize occurs.
Nine of the sailors are local members of the Melbourne Yacht Club, which is sponsoring this event. Husband and wife sailors, Dick and Linda Tillman who hold national championship titles will be challenged by competitors from as far away as Rome, Italy. Former olympian, Nancy Heffernan and her dad, Bill Haberland, will also be competing against each other for the coveted title.
With favorable winds and that infamous Florida sunshine forecasted for this week-end, Ballard Park is the place for a picture perfect setting while the sunfish prepare for this exciting event. The best times for viewing the festivities are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, between 10 am and 4 pm.
