Surveying Motor Yachts For Sale
When checking out and comparing one or more motor yachts for sale that you are interested in buying, it is always wise to hire out an experienced yacht surveyor to properly satisfy all quality requirements and any questions you might have.
While there is no official qualification for surveyors working on motor yachts for sale, it is good to find a surveyor who is a member of a professional group. However, another school of thought is that overall experience of yachts (sailing yachts and motor yachts for sale) is more important.
Remember to listen to the surveyor and to heed his report on the motor yacht for sale you are thinking of buying. There have been cases where unheeded warnings turned out to be true, costing boat owners a lot of avoidable expenses.
Surveys are useful for many reasons, especially when buying used motor yachts for sale. These include the vessel’s overall condition and maintenance, signs of osmosis (especially in GRP boats), estimating the value motor yachts for sale, and for the overall expertise they bring with them. Many insurers also require that the vessel is surveyed by a qualified surveyor. If the vessel is new, the surveyor can also make sure that it is build correctly, thus saving you from getting into bad deal for new motor yachts for sale.
Technically, a survey is done out of the water, and includes examination of structural, electrical and mechanical elements, along with recommendations for repairs and replacements, and the previously mentioned valuation on used motor yachts for sale.
A surveyor will normally take minimum a half day to properly and thoroughly inspect average motor yachts for sale. This does not include a written report, which could take another day or two (depending on many factors of course). All this, naturally, depends on the size of the vessel you are interested in. Unless you are an expert yourself, (in which case it is still a good idea to have a second opinion) you should think of money you spend on the yacht surveyor as money well spent. It is not uncommon for motor yachts for sale to have their prices lowered due to the results of a proper survey. Any defects or posible problems are powerful bargaining tools.
In short, spare some time and money to survey any motor yachts for sale that you are particularly interested in, especially when you narrow down to one or two choices, since these surveys can really tip the balance!

Technically, surveyors for motor yachts for sale and other types of pleasure crafts are called “Yacht and Small Craft Surveyors”. These come in two flavours – independent surveyors, or those hired by insurance companies to check potentially insurable vessels. It is always good practice to check your national/regional entity for contacts and further information, including a list of acknowledged surveyors.
